A Note from Defeat the Streets Founder, Deborah Tomasi...
I’m a city girl at heart. I grew up at the northern tip of Manhattan in an eclectic little community called Inwood abutting the Hudson River and the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge (Dutch for “in spite of the devil”!). We were surrounded by parks and flanked by Columbia University’s athletic facilities on the north end and the Cloisters on the south just on the border of the neighboring enclave of Washington Heights...

I am a native New Yorker who has seen this city change a great deal over the years. The dedication of each defeat the streets committee member to take an active role and make a contribution inspires me to do more. Together, we help to ensure our vision is clear and our goals are met.

Favorite Hero: Superman! He’s has great abilities, yet he could have just sat back at let things on earth be. Instead he decided to take action and change this world for the better.

Noemi Nin
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, I came to NYC as an adult and the city has opened the door for me to develop as an individual and as a leader. My commitment is inspired by the determination to plant a seed of kindness. defeat the streets provides an opportunity to help me see how our efforts positively affect our NYC communities.
Favorite Hero: Wonder Woman. One of her quotes is “So I stay, I fight, and I give for the world I know can be”.

My motivation for nonprofit work stems from a desire to facilitate change and make impactful differences in order to positively affect our community, and it is fueled further by working alongside these inspiring individuals. I immigrated to New York from India when I was only a child, and I wholeheartedly believe in providing others with the same opportunities I was fortunate to have and supporting each other through times of hardship.

I joined defeat the streets because I believe in their mission and was very impressed with the dedicated people working together to fulfill the organization’s vision. I am grateful for the opportunity to help affect positive change in NYC.
Favorite Hero: When I was younger my favorite super hero was always Superman because i dreamed of being able to fly like him. As I grew older, I appreciated the fact that Superman used his powers to help the less fortunate and those in need.
